Throughout my life I've enjoyed creating things using my hands. Making art is my favorite way of exploring the world. It makes me pay attention to little details and observe all kinds of wonders large and small. My interest in observing, appreciating and creating art prompted me to earn my Batchelor's degree in Art and Education.
Curiosity is usually what motivates me to create my artwork. Making art is an almost magical process for me. Nothing is more satisfying than bringing to life my ideas through art and in the process encountering the gems of the unexpected.
I like combining the graceful, elegance of natural forms, and a variety of decorative patterns and motifs. I commonly use imagery of plants, animals, mythology, and architecture. I’m interested in using color as a design and emotional element, and utilizing the rhythm of a pattern. Pattern or parts of a pattern can reference a decorative style reminiscent of an historical time or place, or it can stimulate a more personal memory association of ordinary life, such as the wallpaper design in one’s childhood bedroom, or the fabric design in a favorite dress or shirt. It brings life and movement into a piece.
I have an eclectic patchwork of artistic influences. These include; Medieval illuminated manuscripts; Persian miniatures; Renaissance frescoes and paintings; European and Islamic architecture; Japanese woodcuts; kimono fabrics; and antique textile and wallpaper designs, especially Eighteenth and early Twentieth century European; Ballet Russe costume and stage designs. I could go on and on.
I am always grateful to the many great and extraordinary artists throughout history who continue to amaze and inspire even over decades and centuries of time. We live in a world rich with inspiration. For me, the best art illuminates our experience of being human and the wonder of life on Earth.
